Preheat oven to 450 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, sift together cornmeal, flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Add milk, shortening and egg. Beat with a rotary beater or wire whisk until smooth, about 1 minute. Pour into well-greased 8-inch-square baking pan. Bake 20 to 25 minutes. Serve Warm with butter. Makes 8 or 9 servings.
