Combine rolled oats, soda and 1/4 teaspoon salt. In large saucepan combine brown sugar, shortening and butter or margarine. Cook and stir over low heat until melted; remove from heat. Stir in dry ingredients. Add eggs; mix well. Drop from a teaspoon 3 inches apart onto a greased cookie sheet; stir remaining batter often. Bake in 375 degree oven for 6 to 7 minutes. Cool 2 minutes; remove to wire rack. Makes about 48 cookies.
