Preheat oven to 375 F. Grease 2 (9-inch) layer pans and line with wax paper; set aside. Stir shortening to soften. Sift in flour, baking powder, salt and sugar. Add half of the milk and vanilla plus the eggs and beat 1 minute. Add remaining milk and vanilla, blend and beat an additional 2 minutes. If beating by hand, allow at least 100 full strokes per minute. Scrape bowl and spoon often.
Pour batter into prepared pans and bake for 25 to 30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
