For Urinary Stoppages, Restricted Mineral Diet: The bodies of some cats cannot manage mineral matter properly. (On ordinary pet food labels, mineral matter may be referred to as "ash.") Mineral crystals in the bladder or urethra gather together to form larger units called calculi, gravel, or stones. The presence of this matter can cause pain during urination, blood in the urine, and even retention of urine (which can cause blood poisoning).
The feline c/d diet is different from any ordinary cat food because the mineral content is only the amount necessary for proper nutrition. Hence, there is less mineral matter available in your cat's system to encourage stone formation. In addition, it is high in protein, fat, vitamin A, and B complex vitamins, and is easily digested for use by the body.
