Cream butter and sugar together; add eggs. Combine soda, spices and flour. Alternate flour mixture and buttermilk in egg mixture. Add jam. Bake in 3 pans at 350 degrees.

To make filling: Mix all ingredients and boil until thickened. Spread on cake.
