Sift flour and salt into a mixing bowl. Add milk and butter/ margarine and mix with a wooden spoon for 1-2 minutes or with an electric mixer for 1/2 - 1 minute.
Knead dough lightly into a round [flattened ball] and place in a greased and floured 18cm (7inch) sandwich cake tin. Bake in a hot oven at 220 °C (425°F) for 25-30 minutes. Cool on a wire cooling tray. Serve sliced, spread with butter and jam, if desired.
